FAQ

Why should I use BaloneyMeter?

We all want to make an informed decision when purchasing a product, but how can we when the product reviews are littered with paid, misleading, or incentivized reviews? BaloneyMeter filters through the Amazon product reviews and adjusts the star rating so that you can see what users who actually bought the product and weren’t paid or reimbursed thought about it.

How do I use BaloneyMeter?

Exactly like you would use Amazon.com! Just type in the search bar and BaloneyMeter will return results in a list format that you can filter the same way that you would on Amazon. All of the familiar sort options are there such as price, rating, prime eligibility, as well as additional search options for adjusted rating and baloney score. When you find a product you are interested in, simply click the link to go directly to the Amazon page for that item.

Why are the Amazon rating and the Adjusted rating the same even though the Baloney score is high?

BaloneyMeter analyzes and compares reviews left by actual purchasers with those left by incentivized reviewers. Oftentimes, incentivized reviewers will leave higher ratings than actual purchasers, however occasionally the review scores of both groups are similar, and in these cases the adjusted rating will match the Amazon rating.

Who are Amazon verified purchasers and why do they matter?

Since any user with an account can write product reviews, companies are able hire or pay people to post positive reviews of their products on Amazon. The tag “Verified Purchase” is only added to a product review if Amazon is able to verify that the reviewer purchased that item at Amazon.com. The "Amazon Verified Purchase" review label offers an additional way to help gauge the quality and relevance of a product review.
